Mechanical, electrical and public health services design for a 671 bed student accommodation building located in the centre of Cardiff
The scheme has been designed as two blocks (North and South) built around open central courtyards with a common internal central core area. The building rises to 7 storeys at the North end Alongside the accommodation space the development incorporates administration facilities, a gym, cinema room, laundries, retail areas and high specification social spaces
The development has a Building Emission Rate (BER) of 37.2 against a Target Building Rate (TER) of 40.8 and utilises Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant as a first stage in the provision of domestic hot water. Each of the 671 bedroom spaces are provided a pod bathroom incorporating a shower
- the second stage of hot water production is provided by gas fired condensing water heaters
- LTHW heating is provided by gas fire condensing boilers
- generally the building is naturally ventilated, with heat recovery mechanical ventilation being provided in the internal spaces which are unable to be ventilated naturally
- a highly energy efficient LED lighting scheme has been utilised throughout the building
- online access system to accommodation providing enhanced safety and security for the occupants and allowing users controlled access to their area of the building
